Mastering Spanish Irregular Verbs , level A1

Today, we are opening the door to Irregular Verbs.

A verb is considered irregular if its stem (the base of the word) changes when you conjugate it. While that might sound intimidating, there is a very comforting pattern to these changes. Once you learn the "boot rule," you will be handling them with total confidence!

The Golden Rule of Present-Tense Stem Changers

Before looking at the specific verb groups, there is one universal law you must memorize: The nosotros and vosotros forms are NEVER affected by stem changes in the present tense. They keep the regular, original stem of the verb.

Because the change happens in every pronoun except those two, teachers often call these "Boot Verbs" (if you draw a line around the changing forms on a conjugation chart, it forms the shape of a boot).

1. Irregular "-ar" Verbs

For irregular -ar verbs, you will use the exact same endings you already know (-o, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an), but the stem shifts.

Stem Change: $e \rightarrow ie$

In this group, the e in the stem splits into an ie. Notice how the nosotros and vosotros forms stay completely regular:

  • Cerrar (to close)

    • yo cierro / nosotros cerramos

    • cierras / vosotros cerráis

    • él cierra / ellos cierran

  • Pensar (to think)

    • yo pienso / nosotros pensamos

    • piensas / vosotros pensáis

    • Ud. piensa / Uds. piensan

  • Empezar (to begin)

    • yo empiezo / nosotros empezamos

    • empiezas / vosotros empezáis

    • ella empieza / ellas empiezan

2. Irregular "-er" Verbs

Irregular -er verbs keep standard endings (-o, -es, -e, -emos, -éis, -en), but feature a couple of common stem variations.

Stem Change: $e \rightarrow ie$

  • Entender (to understand)

    • yo entiendo / nosotros entendemos

    • entiendes / vosotros entendéis

    • ella entiende / ellas entienden

  • Perder (to lose)

    • yo pierdo / nosotros perdemos

    • pierdes / vosotros perdéis

    • Ud. pierde / Uds. pierden

  • Querer (to want)

    • yo quiero / nosotros queremos

    • quieres / vosotros queréis

    • él quiero / ellos quieren

  • Tener (to have)

    • ⚠️ Note: Tener has a completely irregular yo form (tengo), but follows the $e \rightarrow ie$ pattern everywhere else inside the boot!

    • yo tengo / nosotros tenemos

    • tienes / vosotros tenéis

    • ella tiene / ellas tienen

Stem Change: $o \rightarrow ue$

In this family, the o in the stem transforms into a ue:

  • Devolver (to return an object / give something back)

    • yo devuelvo / nosotros devolvemos

    • devuelves / vosotros devolvéis

    • ella devuelve / ellas devuelven

  • Poder (to be able / can / may)

    • yo puedo / nosotros podemos

    • puedes / vosotros podéis

    • él puede / ellos pueden

  • Volver (to return / come back)

    • yo vuelvo / nosotros volvemos

    • vuelves / vosotros volvéis

    • Ud. vuelve / Uds. vuelven

Special Group: Irregular in the Yo Form Only

These verbs are completely regular in every single conjugation except for the first person (yo). They do not change their stems anywhere else:

  • Hacer (to do / to make)

    • yo hago / nosotros hacemos

    • haces / vosotros hacéis

    • él hace / ellos hacen

  • Poner (to put)

    • yo pongo / nosotros ponemos

    • pones / vosotros ponéis

    • ella pone / ellas ponen

3. Irregular "-ir" Verbs

Verbs ending in -ir take the basic endings (-o, -es, -e, -imo, -ís, -en), but they can undergo three different types of stem shifts.

Stem Change: $e \rightarrow ie$

  • Mentir (to lie)

    • yo miento / nosotros mentimos

    • mientes / vosotros mentís

    • él miento / ellos mienten

  • Preferir (to prefer)

    • yo prefiero / nosotros preferimos

    • prefieres / vosotros preferís

    • ella prefiere / ellas prefieren

  • Venir (to come)

    • ⚠️ Note: Much like tener, venir has an irregular yo form (vengo), but follows the standard $e \rightarrow ie$ pattern for the rest of the boot.

    • yo vengo / nosotros venimos

    • vienes / vosotros venís

    • Ud. viene / Uds. vienen

Stem Change: $e \rightarrow i$

Instead of splitting into two vowels, the e simply changes directly into an i:

  • Pedir (to ask for / to request)

    • yo pido / nosotros pedimos

    • pides / vosotros pedís

    • Ud. pide / Uds. piden

  • Repetir (to repeat)

    • yo repito / nosotros repetimos

    • repites / vosotros repetís

    • él repite / ellos repiten

  • Seguir (to follow / to continue)

    • yo sigo / nosotros seguimos

    • sigues / vosotros seguís

    • ella sigue / ellas siguen

  • Sonreír (to smile)

    • yo sonrío / nosotros sonreímos

    • sonríes / vosotros sonreís

    • él sonríe / ellos sonríen

  • Servir (to serve)

    • yo sirvo / nosotros servimos

    • sirves / vosotros servís

    • Ud. sirve / Uds. sirven
